A simple boxing technique here. Thing is, it’s really common, but sometimes it can be overlooked.
Some time ago I posted a video on the boxing technique of striking the centre of mass. This is really effective because you then get 3 targets along the centreline – the chin, the chest and the solar plexus.
So striking the chest is cool because it’s really difficult to defend, it constitutes a great scoring shot and it hurts as well!
The thing is that in the video there was one thing that I didn’t mention – it makes a fantastic trigger to draw the lead of the opponent.
This is because as you drop to strike the jab low the opponent feels in a dominant position and consequently is more likely to draw a lead.
If you know this, it works in your favour – this is about being an active counter puncher.
So think about jabbing to the chest (centre of mass) and using it as a platform to deliver some solid counter punches AFTER you have executed a simple lay back or push away and back.
t’s a simple boxing technique, but one that you should really be aware of. I mean look, if it’s good enough for Floyd Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez and Vasyl Lomachenko then it’s good enough for us.
Get used to jabbing up and down the centre line to draw that lead, make things happen, that’s what makes winners.
I’d love to hear your thoughts so post them below.
Cheers

I have been using the jab to the middle, with my girl Erene, its very effective as she is small.
Thanks Fran awesome breakdown of a real canny shot. My old coach used to call it the heart punch, he had me throwing it at least 20 times on the pads per training session great for pulling your opponent on to a shot. I used to spar with some very tall lads where this one would be the only thing that stopped them jabbing me head off. They didn’t really know how to counter it as I remember Fran, also I would resort to it when I was losing a round it bought me some time and got me back in the game when I got frustrated …. mostly lol
Some perfectly described additional benefits there Mark…very nice. That buying time one is a belter!
Really good video. I’ve had great success with this in the past. Really good tools you’re putting out Fran. Really appreciated!
Thank you Kenneth, your feedback is very much appreciated in turn👍
Great video Coach Fran! The chest is often overlooked. Thank you for the reminder. I will be practicing it in my shadow boxing and bag work this week. Trigger, defend, attack! Keep them coming! Cheers and Happy holidays !
Hey Alison…I hope all is well with you👍
Glad it has given you something to work on and glad that you are still hurling leather😉
Thank you for your comment
