Rocky Marciano, the Brockton Blockbuster, retired as undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. 43 of his 49 opponents failed to hear the final bell. In this video we are going to run through a boxing style analysis of Rocky Marciano, a style that was elegantly simple and brutally effective.
There are 4 areas that I cover in Marciano’s style analysis:
- Footwork – Marciano was flat-footed and his stance was narrow, everything I can’t teach to an amateur boxer. On the other hand he inched forward and kept the opponent under constant pressure, not a second to relax.
- Defense – Marciano’s waist-bend defence took him off the centre line and made it really difficult for opponents to catch him clean (it also provided a great platform for Rocky to launch counter attacks)
- Attack sequences – Rocky had 2 primary attack sequences; the jab and hook and the ‘Suzy Q’ right hook. His uppercut was fantastic and he didn’t mind using the head, rabbit punches and forearms. Not for the faint-hearted!
- Conditioning and will – Rocky Marciano had as good conditioning as anyone in boxing. He was remorseless, non-stop. He was like a metronome. As soon as he sensed tiredness he would up his pace…from that point forward there was only one ending.

I just discovered your videos and blogs and I love them alot you are a great coach and a great guy.
Could you do more about Marciano, maybe a long breakdown of his style? I dont know any coach to teach me that and I think you explain it great!!
My skills improved alot through you, thanks Fran! I will follow your stuff!
Hi Himmet. Thank you for your comment and my apologies for the delay. I will see what I can do. Are there any other boxers you like?
Ramadan Mubarek Fran!
Well I would like to adjust my boxing style with some techniques of Joe Frazier. He was great. And Im interested in Liston, my favorite fighter ever!
Ramadan Mubarek Himmet
I like the idea of doing something on Liston, definitely more to that man than many people think👍
Really narrow stance, flat feet & bending at the waist. Doesn’t sound like the makings of a good pro boxer, much less an undefeated one eh Fran? haha
Outrageous isn’t it 😂. Definitely in the category that says “a true one-off!”
Greetings Fran,
It’s been awhile, but before I even watch the video I have to say that after reading the exciting description for it I am as excited to see it as any upcoming high-budget blockbuster film…lol
Be well Coach.
Hey Paul. Really nice to hear from you pal, I hope that all is well with you. I like that anticipation, I hope that you enjoyed the run through of the Brockton Blockbuster🥊
Rocky has always been a hero. Short arms and stock build meant he couldnt really jab , so the suzy q was born . Keep up good work , Fran
