We all want to maximize our punching power when throwing left hooks and right crosses. We can try to increase punching power in a number of ways, but some simple actions can be taken when throwing your punches to achieve a power up.
This video takes you through 2 key ways of maximizing your punching power:
- Use of slips
- The lead foot step across.
When slipping punches, you also get the added bonus of counter punching.
Use the jab, and then either slip inside and fire a left hook (or uppercut) or slip outside and fire in a good, solid right cross.
You can also use a right hand instead of the jab. So right hand, slip outside, right hand.
Either way, the slip has the effect of building up power in the following punch by engaging the front leg (for left hand work) or the rear leg (for right hand work).
The lead foot step across when throwing your right cross is another great method for adding in extra power.
As you throw the right cross, step across with the lead foot.
Don’t overuse this though, you will become predictable and open to counterpunches coming back your way.
So, 2 simple ways to maximize punching power with your left hooks and right crosses.

Very interesting stuff! Next week i’ll finally have acces to a heavy bag again and i will try this definitely. Can’t wait!
Yes Jack, sounds good 🙂 Stay relaxed, make the technique good and don’t try to hit to hard. It’s about relaxation, acceleration and timing👍
I will keep that in mind. Thank you!
Great stuff as always.
