I watched a few fights involving Teofimo Lopez ahead of his showdown with Vasyl Lomachenko. To my shame I had not kept an eye on his development prior to that.
To be quite honest though, I did not think that Lopez would have the variety and versatility to overcome Lomachenko.
Lopez was clearly a top boxer. Good style, precise skills, good hand speed, physically big and a real power puncher.
But this is Lomachenko we’re talking about. To beat Lomachenko you have to to have something bigger than conventionally good boxing skills and power.
Well, it turned out that Teofimo Lopez had exactly the thing needed to beat Lomachenko…a brilliant boxing brain and a superbly simple and effective strategy.
The fight between Lomachenko and Lopez was classically a fight of two halves – Lopez dominating the first 6 rounds and Lomachenko coming back strong in the final 6 rounds.
In the video I talk through:
- How Teofimo Lopez forced Lomachenko to be passive.
- How Lopez denied Lomachenko the opportunity to use his mesmeric angles.
- How Lopez ensured that he kept on being the aggressor without over-committing once.
All of these things were delivered because of one simple element – a defensive posture coupled with an offensive style.
Will we get to see a return? I hope so, I think there is plenty of mileage in the competition between these guys. We will see, the politics of boxing has a way of denying us this type of spectacle 🙁
Be glad to hear your thoughts.
Cheers

Hello Fran,
Thanks for all the great videos and tips. I think you have one of the best coaching programs available on the Internet.
I just started boxing when I was 60, so bit of a late start.
Now I’m 71, train hard 3 times per week with a local boxing team and feel in better physical shape than most 20 year olds! Everyone else in my class is between 16 & 26.
That’s pretty amazing considering all the injuries I had when I was young playing full contact team sports like ice hockey & American football. I compete in the masters division for my age/weight class.
I was wondering if you could send me your free book. I can’t seem to get access to it because my email already exists in your system. Plus, I’m a bit of a tech dinosaur, so may not be pressing the right button.
Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Mark
Hello Mark
Excellent that pal, thanks so much. Solid work. I won’t say that’s impressive for a man of your age, it’s impressive period. Your sporting background is no doubt standing you in good stead, especially when it comes to showing that mental toughness that is definitely needed in Masters competition. I’ve emailed you a copy of the book pal, check your spam folder as it may have ended up in there. Thanks again Mark, and Happy New Year.

Hi Fran
Couldn’t agree more with your comments about the Loma vs Lopez fight, most people I spoke to about the fight were only mentioning what Loma didn’t do rather than what Lopez did do, I thought it was such an entertaining fight with an awesome technical and tactical performance from Lopez, he had a brilliant game plan and stuck to it, definitely a fight of two halves and for my money I could only split them by one or two points and Lopez fully deserved the win.
Would love to see them go at it again and I reckon you could flip a coin for the winner.
I’m working my way through the boxing coach monthly program and can’t thank you enough for the awesome structure of the program, so helpful and so informative.
Thanks again, stay safe and keep up the good work 🥊🥊🥊
Best regards
Pete
Hey Pete
Great fight. Lots of talk now about a rotator cuff injury to Lomachenko, maybe that will give some weight to the chance of a rematch…we’ll see.
Thanks for your comment mate and thanks for your feedback on the monthly program, I’m really glad that it’s helping you out. Any questions you have or help I can be you know where I am.
You keep safe too pal👍
