The left hook is one of the most potent weapons in the boxer’s armoury. This left hook technique tutorial covers all ranges, head and body, key faults, doubling up and powering up PLUS I tell you about the best left hook I have ever seen thrown in a boxing ring.
You need to master your left hook technique at all ranges, short range, mid range and long range. There are key faults with the left hook that you need to avoid, trying to hit too hard, dropping the right hand and not engaging your legs with the punch.
Your left hook can be powered up by adding in a slip or an inside roll before the punch. Using one of these skills stores energy and leverage to really power up that left hook.
When striking the body with your left hook, your technique needs to ensure that the angle of the shot is the right one – you want the force of the punch to radiate through the opponent’s body in the right way.
Doubling up your left hook is another key skill. You can double to the same target (head or body) or you can switch from one to the other. Think about using your slips when doubling up, this particular left hook technique is high energy and therefore needs to bring results.
Finally, my favourite ever left hook, the most perfect left hook technique I’ve ever seen in a boxing ring – Donald Curry vs Milton McCrory in December 1985. I have no other words other than to say this is the most awesome demonstration of left hook prowess I have ever seen. Here is the link:

Great stuff Fran,
Curry’s hook: I tried slowing it down as much as i could and he takes a very small step to his left and kind of dips and slips and just snaps a perfect hook off it….maybe im crazy but go back to about 5:15-5:16 and i swear its the same exact foot, slip move but with a body hook….anyway looks effortless but devastating..
Hello Mickey
Nice to hear from you, hope you are well. Yes, definitely something I think Curry and Dave Gorman had worked out as a tactic I reckon, so I agree on that body hook. It’s a beauty of a shot 🥊
It was too fast for me to work out Fran lol, Curry seemed to pivot as he landed it, and a slight faint before he threw it,
As for other great hooks, it’s hard to beat Fraziers knockdown of Ali in the 15th round,
And a special mention to Tommy Morrison’s hook on Razor Ruddock.
Two great shots there Paul. The Morrison one was as Ruddock was in ‘attack mode’ so even more damaging👍 Smokin’ Joe’s shot…enough said!
