Are you looking for ways to increase the speed of your punches?
There’s a number of ways to work towards this, but I’ve come across and superb punch speed enhancement method that I now use with my boxers.
The technique I present in this video is courtesy of Andy Wake, the founder of Boxercise.
Andy is a really smart guy, has decades of experience in sports development and is a passionate advocate of all things boxing.
I strongly recommend that you subscribe to Andy’s channel, there’s always stuff that is really easy to action. Here’s the link:

So this punch speed enhancement drill makes use of a resistance band, but in the opposite way to how they are conventionally used in boxing.
Some key points:
1. The resistance band I am using provides a 15lb to 35lb resistance.
2. Make sure you are properly warmed up, this speed drill presents risks around hyperextension of the elbow.
3. This is quality based speed drill, not quantity.
4. Build it in as a regular part of your boxing training program, but don’t do it a week ahead of any fight.
5. 10 seconds of punching with 20 seconds rest – 5 sets.
Subscribe to Andy’s Boxercise channel, it’s well worth your time:

Nice one Fran.
Will give that a go.
Have gone the other way for ages thinking that was the correct way.
Cheers Pal
Yes Jim, you and me both. Always viewed the resistance bands almost as muscle developers and speed enhancers. Same with hand weights. Andy opened my eyes on this one on speed enhancement bit.
Hope you’re doing well pal.
Is this exercise just a temporary improvement for the week of fight night or does it have lasting results?
Oscar
Definitely both – should be something that forms part of your training regime over the long term and focused in to the final weeks ahead of the fight.
Coach Frank, this really helped me, but you think you could upload a video explaining how to preassure my sparring partner to get in range wihout getting hit moving in and slipping or moving in and rolling at the same time like mike tyson to avoid the jab or cross that’d be great, thanks again Coach and excuse my english im not too good
Thanks for the question Armando
Try this…might help: https://www.myboxingcoach.com/3-tips-beat-a-tall-boxer/
Yeah i tried with my sparring partner and it worked specially drawing them in then come in throw jab to the body and the right uppercut to head but i had a hard time trying to slip the jab you think is possible to do this without hurting your back because its really awesome poetry in motion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6MMzmoEJC0 Thanks coach Fran
Yes, drive the slip from the rear leg, keep the back isolated – https://www.myboxingcoach.com/body-movement-slips/
Fran you are the best boxing trainer in the world.
Wow, that’s quite a compliment Mansoor haha
Nice, we used to call it overspeed training, can bring good results!
Cool, thanks for the feedback Robert.
Thanks Fran. That is something I desperately needed help with. I look forward to adding this to my speed drills.
Hope it helps Thom, be consistent over time and I’m confident it will.
