Heavy Bag Tips – Keep it Simple!!!

What are some of the most effective heavy bag tips? Well, for me, it often pays to keep it simple.

Check out this short video:

Heavy Bag Tips – Keep It Simple!

So some key takeaways from the video.

Use your jab, learn to love your jab, it’s a wondrous punch that really demonstrates how good you are.

Try working a round on the heavy bag with just your jab.

Feint then fire, accelerate the shot.

Fire the punch straight out and back, no elbow flare.

Moving on to the close range work.

Hooks and uppercuts, body and head.

I am using the maize bag in the video, a fantastic alternative to the heavy bag, but you can do all of this stuff with the heavy bag too.

Keep your arms close, drive power from the legs, and try rolling after your shots.

The key thing is that defensive thinking is always important even during offensive actions.

So, heavy bag tips…enjoy!

Thanks Jim. Great to be back to a proper boxing club environment😀. We’ve had tons of kids come through the doors, brilliant.

Hope all is well, with you and the gym pal👍

Fran: for the life of me i cant get the knack of that pivot you do at 2:03 in the video–any suggestions?

    • Fran April 28, 2021, 7:54 pm

Hello Greg. You know what, didn’t realise I’d done that 🙂

Not really a pivot, just a foot repositioning, kid of like a front foot shuffle back as the back leg shifts right. Let me have a think, will see if I can maybe put a little video together. To be honest it’s usually a little habit that we do out of range, probably why I didn’t realise I’d done it!

Excellent short vid Fran. I just went through the very same inside work with another coach to help him with his son-amateur boxer, who has a tendency to draw his hands back. It was like watching a mirror image. I like to recall how Joe Louis would knock opponents out with a left hook that didn”t travel more than 6 or 8 inches.

    • Fran April 28, 2021, 7:43 pm

Thank you Pug…hope all is well. Excellent point. If people need to know how to deliver short, powerful hooks and uppercuts, Joe Louis is about as good as it gets. But it is a constant battle with young boxers to keep that ‘shorter is better’ principle at close range.

Grate Idea. Starting with jab the first .then show everything else and footwork. Iam enjoying.
