Get Ready to Rumble with BEGINNER BOXING Basics!

Starting out in boxing can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure where to begin or how to avoid bad habits that could hold you back.

Beginner boxing is an amazing way to learn self-defense, stay fit, and have a blast while doing it! It’s a great workout that can boost your confidence and teach you valuable skills that can benefit you in all areas of life.

I totally get it, though – boxing can seem intimidating, especially if you’ve never thrown a punch before. You might think it’s only for pros, or that you need to be in crazy good shape to even step into a boxing gym. But the truth is, boxing is for anyone willing to learn and put in the effort. You don’t need to be a professional athlete to get started, and you don’t need to be a certain age or fitness level either.

Newsflash: boxing is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves and learn new skills. You don’t need to be fearless or aggressive to be a boxer – you just need to be willing to learn and take it one step at a time.

So, what are the essential boxing basics you need to know? There are 5 key skills I teach in the first minutes of working with those on the beginner boxing journey:

  1. The basic boxing stance
  2. Movement forward and backward
  3. The jab (our most used punch)
  4. The cross (straight back hand)
  5. The duck

You can start the beginner boxing journey by laying down a piece of duct tape. This line should go from the toe on the front foot to the heel on the back foot. It’s ideal if you can lay this line out in front of a mirror, that way you can see exactly whether you are avoiding the key faults.

Move back and forth along the line and combine your movement with your punches. This drill is great for building confidence and getting a feel for the punches. Plus, it will lead to some killer workouts!

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and not be too hard on yourself. You’re not going to be a pro boxer overnight – but with consistent practice and patience, you’ll be throwing punches like a champ in no time.
