When it comes to improving strength and technique in boxing, heavy bag workouts are an excellent way to go. Not only do they provide a killer cardio workout, but they also help you develop your hand-eye coordination, timing, and overall technique.
But let’s be real, we’ve all been there – we start out strong, pounding that heavy bag with enthusiasm, but after a while, the novelty wears off, and the workout starts to feel stale. We get bored with the same old routine, and our workouts start to suffer as a result.
You’re not alone if you’ve ever found yourself going through the motions, just trying to get the workout over with. The problem is, when we get bored, we risk losing motivation, and our progress stalls. We need a way to shake things up, to make our workouts more engaging and effective.
One of the main reasons we get bored is because we’re doing the same old combos over and over again. We get stuck in a routine, and we don’t challenge ourselves to try new things. But what if I told you that there’s a way to take your heavy bag workout to the next level, to make it more exciting, and to get you seeing results again? By incorporating new combo moves into your routine, you can breathe new life into your workouts and take your skills to the next level.
So, what are these magic combo moves that can transform your heavy bag workout?
The first combo is a long range classic. It’s based upon what some people call the pendulum step, I was always taught it as a phased attack. The key is adding a move out after each punch or set of punches. So, the combo is:
- Push in jab push out
- Push in jab, cross push out
- Push in jab, cross, lead hook push out.
The second combo is all about speed, power power and aggression. We work in and then add a bit of Mike Tyson:
- Push in jab, cross, lead hook and roll
- Stance switch left
- Double right hook.
The third and final combo move is similar to the second combo. Again, we are going for speed and aggression to enable power left hooks to finish the combo off, and hopefully finish the opponent off too!
- Jab, push in and slip Left hook, right hook and roll
- Stance switch right
- Double right hook.
So, there you have it – three combo moves that’ll take your heavy bag workout to the next level. By incorporating these moves into your routine, you’ll be able to mix things up, challenge yourself, and see results again. Remember, the key is to keep things fresh and exciting, and to never stop pushing yourself to be better.
Work these combos away from your heavy bag workout. Break them down into simple drills and go with steady, precise repetition. That practice of working the footwork drills in with the punching will pay off in your heavy bag workout.

Hi Fran.
This video provided some good workout combos.
I have a question…on the hook I noticed that you execute with an”arm” hook rather than twisting at the waist to get your upper body power behind the hooking punch. Is this for speed in execution or…?
Thanks as always.

Hello Mike, well spotted, I’d not noticed 🙂 Yes, when going for more speed there will always be less rotation on the hips. I still try to drive off the foot though, always worth avoiding it just being an arm shot
