Boxing Training Tips – Pivot Like a Pro

Pivoting is easily one of the most versatile boxing training tips that I can give to a boxer. As a skill that can be used in attack and defence, it is invaluable.

he pivot is so often overlooked by casual boxing fans. The main reason I think that the pivot is overlooked is that on the face of it the pivot is not a ‘glamorous’ skill.

The pivot does not for example offer the potential for an explosive end to a contest as does a short range left hook. Nor does the pivot catch the eye in the same way as evading an attack by using deft slips and ducks.

So, if there’s one thing that I would like this video to achieve, it’s to provide proof that the pivot is the single most versatile skill that a boxer uses, providing options to unlock many an adversary.

Boxing Training Tips – The Pivot

To use an equine analogy, pivot is a work horse type boxing skill, not a show pony.

In this video I refer also to micro-pivots, the very fine adjustments that allow you to keep the target firmly in your strike zone.

I also give you a demonstration on the heavy bag where you set your front foot directly under the bag, forcing you to really consider how to use that pivot to set your punches.

As killer boxing training tips go, ladies and gentlemen I give you the pivot.

Cheers

Fran

Coincidentally, our Coach (Over-60s Session, Holmes Chapel Boxing Club) introduced us to Pivots just this morning. I’ll have to re-play the video and compare notes.
