This boxing training video was inspired by a question regarding getting out of close range.
The more I thought about the question, the more I thought that we should work through boxing techniques that result in re-positioning rather than exiting.
If you re-position, you are doing so for a purpose. ‘Exit’ feels final, like the job is done, like you don’t have to worry about what comes next.
Of course you can re-position to take a rest, and that’s fine. The key is that you re-position to either fire shots, confuse the opponent, de-moralise them or whatever – there is a purpose.
So the boxing techniques are:
- Straight line shift
- Lateral shift
- Diagonal shift
- Pivot and straight line shift
- Retreat to attack
- Stance switch
- The Pass
All of these techniques can be drilled in your boxing training. Pick 1 technique and work that through in a session.
There are 2 videos that I mention in the video, here are the links:

I really enjoyed this video, Fran! It not only lays out the options for re-positioning yourself, but also connects them with the timing and type of punches to throw before and after.
Neil
Glad you liked it Neil. Good to be able to think of attacks in a number of ways, very challenging (and risky) part of the sport to work.
Great video Fran.
Good habits to get into on the heavy bag and tech spars which will lead to utilising these skills in competition for sure.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jim, glad you enjoyed watching that one👍
Good job Fran. Excellent stuff. You’ve been studying Lomachenko! LOL! Pacquiao used to be great with those quick side shifts.
😂 – Well spotted, it pays Pug haha. And yes, Pac was an excellent exponent of side shifts.
Great video Fran, I am sure to reference this many times going forward. I appreciate your instruction and organization on this, thanks! BQ
