What of the key mistakes that people make as a beginner boxer? This is not about technical mistakes, this is worse than that. This is about the mindset mistakes!
So what are the 4 big boxing for beginners mistakes that I see people make?
- Mistake #1 – Don’t try to run before you learn to walk. 90% of what great boxers do are the basics, they just do them very well. So, it pays to master the basics as a beginner boxer, this will stand you in good stead for what the future holds. It’s far better to have good basic footwork than to look a bit like Canelo on the heavy bag. It’s much more effective to have a good basic jab than to look like Floyd Mayweather on the focus mitts. AS a beginner boxer, focus on nailing the basics – don’t try to run before you walk.
- Mistake #2 – A big rule with boxing for beginners – the fitness you need cannot be delivered by gym work only. You need a good program of running. Do the roadwork, it’s what puts the endurance in the bank!
- Mistake #3 – Don’t pigeon-hole yourself. Don’t stick to one boxing style. Be versatile, be good at lots of things.
- Mistake #4 – A lack of patience. Boxing is a difficult technical skill to learn. Boxing for beginners is particularly challenging, especially if you have not done other sports. So, have patience. It takes time. It takes consistency.
- Mistake #5 – Always be growing, always be learning. Don’t be close-minded. Be humble, there is always more to learn…you can never know it all.

Hey Magnus, really nice to hear from you…hope all is well. Yes, I suppose #5 counts as a good rule for life.
You are a Great and Wise Coach Fran. I’m older guy and have seen several dozen of your boxing video lessons complete with your experienced wisdom. Just absolutely fantastic. I trained in a boxing gym for a couple of years a long time ago.
Thank you Rick. I appreciate you watching the stuff I produce and taking the time to leave some nice words…it’s really kind.
It would be great to visit your gym sometime…
Lots of wisdom there, Fran! You’re a fabulous teacher and mentor. Thanks!
Thanks Gregory, I really appreciate that…you’re very kind to take the time.
Some great tips here really appreciate your content . Was wondering if you had any tips for me for sparring Ive noticed recently I’ve a hesitation and letting my hands go and and putting together combinations seem to wait for the right time constantly and as you know it never comes .
Hi Karl. Stop thinking combinations and start thinking ones and twos, remove the mindblock of needing a combo…the combos will come.
Cheers fran appreciate the feedback
