Boxing Drills to Build Counter Punching Skills

How do you fancy building some solid counter punching ability. A really important part of counter punching is using the feint to trigger an opponent. After the trigger comes the defence…then comes the attack! These boxing drills are designed to help you build that concept of trigger, defend, attack.

These counter punching boxing drills are all for use at long range. They are simple. We don’t over-complicate boxing and therefore we should not over-complicate our boxing drills.

Boxing Drills for Counter Punching Skills

All of the best counter punchers in boxers trigger the opponent. A popular misconception is that somehow counter punchers wait around to see what happens. They don’t. The best counter punchers are proactive in creating their opportunities.

There are 3 boxing drills to master here, and these drills are run for 3 rounds of 2 minutes each round.

Round 1 – Boxing Drill 1 – Feint, back hand block, one two
Round 2 – Boxing Drill 2 – Feint, push out, push in, one two
Round 3 – Boxing Drill 3 – Feint body, left hook head, right hook head

In the video I talk you through each second of each round of the boxing drills. If you get the individual skills right then you get the effective counter puncher outcome.

Cheers

Fran

Ive just read your comment that we just assume shots are coming. So do we also always throw the block on combination one regardless whether or not the jab comes? Or maybe opponent will throw other punches? Or is it different with this block?

Well with the block Theo, that’s a reactive defence – so as you get more experienced you can see the shot coming and execute the shot. When using a slip or duck or roll, you execute that on the assumption that the shot is coming (it’s a proactive defense).

Great video Fran! Love how you set the record straight on counterpunching being the art of making your opp go where you want him to: That way there’s no surprises and you’re there waiting for him.

Pre-emptive instead of reactionary: always one step ahead, controlling the tempo of the fight.

    Thank you so much Fran

No worries Denny, glad you liked it. And yes, make the opportunities…don’t wait👍

Me rikee. I’ve heard it said (erroneously) two counter-punchers fighting are ‘two men waiting for the other to go first’. Not the way you coach it, Fran. Two, Fran coached, counter-punchers will be a busy affair! Love this video format.
Keep it up! (That’s what she said …)

It’s a staple isn’t it Jim. I don’t think it can be worked enough. They get that right they can cause any opponent trouble. Hope all is well with you mate👍
