This is the 2nd video in a series of 3. The first video <> described the concepts of aggressive and defensive boxing. This video is about taking those concepts and developing boxing drills to help you make your boxing training dynamic and effective.
Just as a refresher from the previous video, we covered the art of defensive fighting and my 4 aspects that mark out quality defensive work:
- Occupy the edge of range
- Use triggers
- Use a killer jab
- Get comfortable with front foot pivots.
We also covered the 5 aspects that I think make great aggressive boxing:
- Be dynamic – occupy the edge of range
- Use proactive defence
- Volume and intensity
- Rear foot pivot and lateral movement
- Be inventive at close range.
Once you have the concept, the next step is to build a set of boxing drills that allow you to ingrain the skills through deliberate and focused practice.
So the boxing drills are done over 3 rounds of 2 minutes each round.
Boxing Drills – Round 1:
Minute 1 – Slip in and out whilst moving forward
Minute 2 – Movement forward with punching
Boxing Drills – Round 2
Uppercut body, left hook body, left hook head – stance switch – double hook.
Boxing Drills – Round 3
Jab and push away – back hand
Add in the picot with left hook.
You need to be disciplined when running these boxing drills. There is no substitute for precise repetition, taking it as slow as you need to get it right.
Cheers

Hi Fran. Enjoying your tips a lot.
I add your drills at the end of my training sessions, but with the current lockdowns on-off and all the gyms closed for more than half a year it is challenging to keep.
We are not a professionals after all.
Is it possible you publish a structured scheme of 3 workouts to cover, say, one week, defensive and one week aggressive approach?
Keep safe.

Hi Yevgeni
Thanks you for your contribution. You are right, it’s very difficult to keep the positivity and motivation at the right levels.
Good suggestion. leave it with me, I have made a note and will do some thinking to see if I can come up with something, time permitting. Much appreciated Yevgeni.
you are helping a lot fran . With this lock-up and the gym closed your tips will stand me in very good stead come lock up end . My 2 week grading begins then . The fighting chance might keep me full time if I put that bit extra into it . Thanks again .
That’s great mate, glad to be in a position to help. You have the right mindset. I know it sounds corny, but us coaches just keep in our mind that there’s always new stuff to learn. I’m sure you’ll do fantastic in your grading pal.
