During any contest, if you can make your opponent nervous about using their jab, then victory in the contest becomes almost a formality. So how do we do this? Well, using a boxing combination like this one in response to an opponent’s jab is a sure fire way to gain the psychological edge required when charting a course to victory. We combine 3 distinct skills to form a single chain of actions that form the perfect response to any potential opening left by an opponent’s jab.
OK, the 3 skills that we will combine are:
The first jab not only scores for you, it solicits a response from your opponent, usually a jab. The slip outside must be economic i.e. your opponent’s jab must brush past your left ear. The final shot, the right cross, has been given extra leverage by the slipping the punch on the outside. If your opponent has that rather nasty (and not uncommon) habit of raising their head when they throw the shot, then the final shot can often be a head turner…literally! Oh and by the way, practice this slowly and mechanically, but build the speed up over time. This combination requires fast hands. Your right hook should land whilst your opponent’s jab is still on your left shoulder…yes, really that fast!
