Beating A Taller Boxer With a Killer Strategy

When it comes to beating a taller boxer, there are a number of strategies that we can apply. In this video I cover a specific strategy, delivered with the use of 3 tactics, that will help you damage the opponent on the way in.

Beating a Taller Boxer

A key concept of this strategy is that we fix the opponent with feints. A height advantage (and therefore a reach advantage) is only an advantage when the taller boxer is able to dictate the fight situation.

If the shorter boxer can dictate the exchanges by triggering the opponent to throw punches at a time of their choosing, then that shorter boxer can execute a strategy of breaking the reach advantage of the taller boxer.

This is all about the concept of trigger, defend, attack. The 1st tactic for beating the taller boxer focuses on triggering with the feint, using a reactive defense (for example a block) and then stepping in with the straight power shots.

The 2nd tactic for beating the taller boxer involves switching out the reactive defense for a proactive defense, such as a slip, and using the slip as a platform for the attack.

The final tactic for beating a taller boxer involves switching the angled side shape and targeting the body and head off the centre line. If you can bring a taller boxer forward then bringing the fight to closer range is that much easier.

Cheers Fran, appreciate this! I like how during the execution, you always move (head, or feet) after a shot or combo…or block. Too many guys like to ‘take pictures’ after their offense, as Teddy Atlas would say…not ready to go on the defensive immediately.

      Thanks Dan, hope you’re well.

Most vulnerable time is after you’ve landed the shot. Pretty much the very first thing I teach a boxer after the jab is the duck, getting that concept over of move your head after the punch. Teddy’s not wrong, pretty solid on pretty much everything he says on boxing really 🥊
