My 5 Top Boxing Training Channels

I felt it was long overdue to give you some thoughts on my favourite boxing training channels on YouTube. Apologies for the occasional focus problems…won’t happen again!

5 Top Boxing Training YouTube Channels

I’ve selected 5 channels that I subscribe to, 5 channels that I am happy to recommend to my boxers.

I consider these YouTube channels as boxing training resources that can inspire, that can help me work with my boxers but most importantly that I can rely on to give good advice that comes from a place of experience and expertise.

So I have provided a countdown with a loose ranking:

YouTube Boxing Channel #5 – Wylie’s Art and Science of Boxing https://www.youtube.com/user/LeeWylie1

This channel takes a really nice approach to analysing boxers and boxing fights, both old school and modern day.

From Benny Leonard to Canelo, From Sugar Ray Leonard to Vasyl Lomachenko.

Lee Wylie uses video footage with neat graphics and short narratives to deliver incisive and insightful observations on the styles and tactics on show.

YouTube Channel #4 – World Class Boxing with Tom Yankello – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFd-tIEZTYhdR3lWCQ7inyg/featured

Tom is a very smart boxing guy.  Hugely experienced and coaches boxers from the ground up, running teams of amateurs right up to elite level pros.

Tom has a great delivery and is an exponent of ensuring the message is clear and precise, offering really thorough explanations and demonstrations of skills, tactics and techniques.

YouTube Channel #3 – Coach Anthony – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOamDxdVYntCBFE0jyI2DA

I really like Coach Anthony.  Like Tom he has massive experience and like most of us coaches is hugely passionate about his delivery and explanations.

He has an air of confidence that can only be gained by regular work with lots of different types of boxers.  Top Guy.

YouTube Channel #2 – Andy Wake – Boxercise – https://www.youtube.com/user/BoxerciseLtd

My pal Andy Wake.  Andy is the master of the short video.  He has a rich history in not just boxing but in track and field events.  He has trained Olympic athletes and is a genuine sports scientist, making often complex scientific concepts really simple and clear.

From nutrition, technical fixes, smart boxing footwork drills and punching enhancements through to avoidance of injury.  A hugely helpful resource to me as a boxing coach.

YouTube Channel #1 – Alexei Frolov School of Boxing – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQxhrxXQTUXJhQcM6yeh06A

This is my favourite!

This gentleman, Alexei Frolov, is a genuine professor of boxing.

I have always held a real passion and admiration for the former-Soviet amateur boxing system.  It held a mystery for me as a young boxer and has led to the amazing successes of the Cubans, Ukrainians, Uzbeks, Kazakhs…the list goes on.

Alexei’s videos are authentic, genuine and passionate.  We often get a ‘fly on the wall’ view of his training sessions with his boxing squads that fascinate and inspire me.

He is elite-level and I pick up amazing tips to help with training my own boxers.

He has a gentle delivery, shows great patience and brilliant communication with his boxers.  Genuinely second-to-none.

So there we have it, my go-to YouTube channels…I hope you have enjoyed watching.

Cheers

Fran

Recently there have been many YouTube videos from Tony Jeffries, who had a successful career as an amateur and a professional. Does he seem like a good coach?

    • Fran January 2, 2021, 5:57 pm

Hi Ken. Yes, Tony produces lots of really good coaching videos, worth watching

  • JASON September 30, 2020, 3:44 pm

coach anthony is the best…this guy really breaks it down and teaches advanced stuff…critical boxing knowledge.

  • D March 3, 2020, 2:43 pm

This is wonderful. I’m British but speak Russian, and Frolov is incredible. It’s great to see that you’ve picked out his personal characteristics so well even without knowing Russian yourself. I wish I could communicate some of the subtleties of his delivery to different students of his: he seems to know exactly when to be more demanding (or even angry) and when to be gentle or supportive. And of course, this is coupled with his technical knowledge, which is nothing like anything I’ve seen in five years of boxing.

When I recommend videos to people, I send your beginner videos to those starting out and Frolov’s to boxing fanatics.

Now a question: what do you think about his idea to “stand up” on (some) punches. Having been trained in the UK all the time I’ve been boxing, I’ve always been taught to sit down on punches, twist from the hips, etc. But as you’ve probably seen he actively encourages standing up, both for jabs and crosses (although he has such variety that this is not always the case).

Second, what do you think of such a high emphasis on the pendulum step? Again, this is something that I have rarely seen emphasised in the UK. Of course, all this just confirms your points about the importance of versatility!

    Thanks loads Fran!

    • Fran March 8, 2020, 6:54 pm

      Hi D

Thanks for our comment and question. Very much a no-brainer recommending Alexei, he’s just excellence personified.

Yes, I understand the standing up principle that he teaches. ‘Sitting down’ on punches is very much a principle that puts an emphasis on additional power. The stand up approach maintains the ability to be mobile and maximises length and range.

On the pendulum step, the Eastern European principles around this are very much taught to amateur coaches in the UK now, certainly for the last few years. This goes against somewhat what has been done for many years, but I think is is a big step forward (ni pun intended) and boxers in the UK will benefit from this.

      Thanks mate.

    Hi Fran,

Thanks for those great resources. Have you checked out Precision Striking channel on YouTube, and precisionstriking.com? I’ve found his material and presentation helpful. Be interested to hear your take on it, as I respect your knowledge and experience.

    Cheers,
    Karl

      Hello Karl

Thanks for your question. Yes I’ve seen Jason’s stuff. He’s bright, a good communicator and has a boxing background. The other guys to me though are active coaches, coaching teams of boxers day in and day out, so their insights contain more value to me as an active coach. That make sense?

      • Karl Farren February 9, 2020, 9:13 pm

Makes perfect sense, Fran. I’ll definitely check out the channels you’ve recommended. As I said, nothing but respect for you, and your teaching. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

        • Fran February 9, 2020, 9:39 pm

          No worries, thanks Karl👍

        • Anonymous February 10, 2020, 6:30 am

I like that guy as well, but I get what Frans saying too. Suppose that’s just the basic rule of statistics…for a coach, the larger the sample size of trainees the more information they have and so better understand the whole process!

          • Fran February 11, 2020, 7:27 pm

            Yep…pretty much👍

  • Robert Pearson February 5, 2020, 7:17 pm

Alexei Frolov, is a genuine professor of boxing. I must agree I followed the link and must say even thou I don’t understand Russian but wow what teachings I haven’t be able to stop watching thanks for sharing

Yep, for sure Robert…glad it helped👍

Glad it helped Pug – smart folk…

  • aidan murphy February 4, 2020, 5:59 am

Cheers Fran they’re good channels. Any plans for you next course release?
Maybe counterpunching and style building? Similar to your you tube playlist stuff?

    • Fran February 4, 2020, 9:29 pm

Hey Aidan. Glad you liked the stuff. Emailed you something you might be interested in…currently it’s only available to BTF and CRFC people…might be helpful.

You are already part of the team – it was MyBoxingCoach Monthly 😉

  • Allison February 4, 2020, 2:20 am

Hi Coach Fran, always good to hear from you and happy to see 2 of my favorite channels on your list! I absolutely love your channel, Coach Anthony’s and Coach Tom Yankello’s. I’m hoping to meet Coach Tom on Feb 8th for a personal training session. I didn’t realize that his gym is only 2 hours from here! I also like Precision Striking by JT vanheusen (sp?) a Canadian trainer from Toronto, Canada. All of these guys, including yourself, have a special way of teaching the sweet science so that the average Joe can learn and execute the drill/punch/combo with proper technique. Thanks for the list, I look forward to learning more on the other channels that you mentioned. Cheers! Allison, Cleveland, Ohio

    • Fran February 4, 2020, 9:22 pm

Excellent Allison, make the most of your 1-2-1 with Tom, I’m sure you will get a huge amount from that. Thank you for writing…hope all is well.

  • Josh Warren February 3, 2020, 11:28 pm

Hi fran, just lost my first boxing fight and trained very hard for it, was technically better than the opponent but he had much better fitness, any idea why I may have ran out of stamina in the first round although I done my all my running 3 times a week and in the gym 3 times a week

    • Fran February 4, 2020, 9:21 pm

Hey Josh. Difficult to say. Did you feel that you recovered during the 1 minute rest period? Wonder whether you were aerobically sound but maybe anaerobic capacity was an issue? Sprint work etc.? Nerves can play a part, the uncertainty of the first bout…you will be netter equipped for the next one.

      • Josh Warren February 4, 2020, 10:23 pm

Yeah I didn’t recover during the one minute break which was strange, nerves definitely play a part. I ran 800m intervals for 4 sets twice a week and a 3 mile run at 7 minute pace once a week, wonder how I could improve my running routine

        • Fran February 6, 2020, 8:15 pm

Running routine sounds in general. Maybe some shorter sprints, more intense sprints with recovery. Check your pulse and max work rate then one minute later…this will give you a benchmark to check against.

          • Josh Warren February 7, 2020, 11:17 pm

            Thank you Fran!

          • Fran February 9, 2020, 8:38 pm

            You’re welcome Josh
