An Errol Spence Jr breakdown, focusing on the 3 boxing style traits that I think mark out ‘The Truth’ as a serious operator in the boxing world. The Spence Jr boxing style is a very interesting mix of offense, defence and tactical awareness.
Errol Spence Jr, welterweight and super welterweight champion of the world, 135 amateur bouts, Golden Gloves champ, national champion and Olympian. Spence Jr has been well-schooled in boxing from a very early age.
This history in the sport makes Spence Jr a really smart operator, and there are 3 areas that I focus on in this video.
#1 – Stance and Form
Errol Spence Jr is a southpaw with his body weight generally centred or on the rear leg. This is a defensive posture even though Spence Jr spends a lot of time in offense mode. The odd thing to me is that Spence Jr does not really apply traditional southpaw tactics.
#2 – Long Range Work
At long range Spence Jr makes use of simple jabs and looping back hands. His jab is extremely well executed – hard, precise and fast. His long range work is geared toward him building the strategy up to get to close range and do damage.
#3 – Trench Fighting
Spence Jr is a great exponent of brutal but skilful close range work. He’s not a big combination puncher, but is high volume. He uses single and two punch combinations, whipping hooks and uppercuts from the body to head and back again. Spence Jr is the human equivalent of blunt force trauma. He has a fantastic engine, is strong and has great endurance.
The Errol Spence Jr breakdown comes down to one central aspect – he makes opponents work incredibly hard, and he keeps them working hard. He will keep you going and ultimately bring you to close range to bring those heavy hooks and uppercuts to bear.
Cheers
